Challenge #16- She's Somebody's Hero

Hi there!  This is Elizabeth and I'm excited to bring you the main challenge for May (my first one YAY).   You can read my heart and the story behind this Challenge here.

This month in the US we will celebrate Mother's Day.  Our May Challenge is to create a project that is inspired by our Mothers.  How have you been blessed by your mother?  What everyday miracles have you missed in the past but see clearly now?  Some of us may not know our mothers, but have had mother figures about whom our project can be focused upon. Maybe you're thinking to yourself my relationship with my mother is nothing to be celebrated.  We believe that even if that is the case God wants to meet you there through this challenge, so please don't lose heart and keep reading after the DT layouts to hear how one of our very own design team members handled that exact situation.

Every challenge at SEM has a scrap twist that participants need to have on their layouts in order to complete the challenge so for the May challenge our scrap twist is....
Scrap twist: Use a page from a book (can be any book, novel, dictionary, etc.)

Here is what our Design Team created for this challenge... (Hover your mouse over the picture to see what each Design Team member has to say about their layout and you can also click on the designers name to visit their blog)

Sherri would like to share with you a little bit about how she handled this challenge....

Perhaps some of you are thinking that your relationship with your mother is the last subject you'd like to be scrapping about. I can assure you, I know exactly where you are coming from. But, I have a challenge for you to consider. It's Sherri here, and yes I am right there with you. Growing up, I saw my mother as weak when it came to the way she interacted with my father, and the way she allowed him to treat all of us. I was determined to be nothing like her as a mother. Period. There was a time when I would have stopped reading this blog post as soon as I discovered it was going to be focused on mothers. I hope, and pray that if that is you, and you somehow made it to this part of the post that you realize that God has brought you here for a reason. He wants to meet with you today, through this challenge. Scripture says that He is at work in you (Philippians 1:6). It says that he has a plan for you (Jeremiah 29:11), and that we are to honor our mother (Ephesians 2:6). It took me several years to put all of these pieces, these promises together to see that God was, and is at work in me and through me despite my relationship with my mother. He showed me that I had so much to offer and a unique way of supporting others because of my mother, all that she did, and didn't do helped me to become the person that I am today. Where she fell short God made up the difference, speaking to me through scripture, and bringing people into my life to walk alongside me in my loneliness. As a mother myself, I now see that although she may have failed me in certain areas of my upbringing, there really were a lot of things, practices, habits, personality traits that she embodied that helped to shape a lot of who I am, and drive my reasoning behind some of the good choices I'm making today, as a parent, a wife, and a friend. God has shown me, through this challenge, that to deny my mother, and her role in my life would be to deny His grace and goodness in my life. Taking time to pray through, and recall the glimpses of good in my relationship with my mother has helped to bring some healing to my heart. You can read more about how I processed this challenge on my blog if you are interested. I pray that the Lord would speak to your heart, as He invites you to open your heart, and consider this challenge. He wants to be able to penetrate the hurt, and apathy you may be feeling, and allow his grace and love to overcome you, bringing tremendous healing. We hope you consider the invitation and welcome any comments you may have.

Please feel free to create any kind of project that celebrates mothers, if it is not your own mother that is okay, honestly it can even be about you as a mother.  Whatever God leads you to create we are excited to have you share it with us.

Our sponsor for the month of May is Seals, Tags and Stuff . . . and the prize they are giving is a gift certificate for $15 to their Etsy Shop (!  Mari is also offering a 15% off discount for our readers in the month of May with the coupon code SCRAPPING15

About Seals, Tags and Stuff

Mari writes, "I'm a mom to a wonderful, full-of-energy 23-month-old girl, and a wife to the most amazing husband a women can have. (Really!) They are both my life! Besides that, I'm a full time graduate student and work part time in a psychopharmacology lab (at school) doing research. I opened my etsy shop as a way to express my creativity and take a break from books and journal articles :) I love everything related to paper and crafts ever since I can remember. However, it wasn't until I was looking for ideas to plan my daughter's first year birthday that I discovered Etsy. I found it mind-blowing that I could make some money by making things I absolutely loved and made all the time for myself.  I started by buying 2 paper punches to create the paper toppers of my daughter's birthday and the rest is history. Currently, I'm pretty busy with thesis work and I have not had a chance to really dedicate much time to my Etsy sites, plus I have tons of things I haven't had a chance to post, but I always appreciate and look forward to the little time I do spend crafting and fulfilling orders!"

If you would like a chance to win a $15 Gift Certificate to Seals, Tags and Stuff . . . , all you have to do is complete the challenge including the scrap twist and link it up by May 31st.

The Gift Certificate is not the only thing you can win...
You could be chosen as the Design Team's Top 3 or the Guest Designer for July.
(Guest Designers are chosen from those that participate in challenges and/or participate in SEM Chit Chat Group on Facebook )

Winners will be announced June 9th!!!
